Luckily the rain held off and we were able to do a few fun portraits at Lafayette Park near the White House. Once at The Arts Club of Washington located in the James Monroe House family and friends gathered for a beautiful courtyard ceremony. The couple of nearly a decade, who have been wearing rings to symbolize their commitment to each other for so long that their fingers bear indentations and faint tan lines from the gold bands, decided to pick up a marriage license themselves. They didn’t really want to make their commitment legal in the decidedly office-like confines of the courthouse marriage bureau. But nor did they want a grand to-do with a pages-long itinerary either. So they set about planning a low-key wedding celebration for their closest friends and family members to be held in Georgetown over Memorial Day weekend. Since DC joined five states in allowing same-sex marriages, gay and lesbian couples have flocked to the district to exchange vows and celebrate their legal unions. In the first week alone, the number of couples applying for marriage licenses in DC Superior Court jumped from an average of 10 to 12 per day to 118 daily, the Los Angeles Times reported in March. Bruce and Chris could not have looked happier as they exchanged vows in a Georgetown garden bursting with greenery and spring blooms. After getting ready together at the nearby Georgetown Suites hotel and affixing white rose boutonnieres to each other’s tuxedo lapels, the couple made the short walk to the Old Stone House Garden. Chris choked up as he voiced his commitment to Bruce. And the couple’s guests cheered and applauded as the officiant pronounced them “legally married” at the end of the ceremony. After some casual portraits in the garden, the newlyweds joined their guests at the nearby Mie N Yu restaurant, where bottomless mimosas, a three-tiered wedding cake and a pink, pink party room awaited. We had initially planned on capping the celebration with a strolling photo session through Georgetown. But it was so hot and humid that Bruce and Chris opted instead to use the very cool spaces (both in temperature and aesthetic) at Mie N Yu for a few more pictures before calling it a day. Congratulations, Bruce and Chris. You were a pleasure to work with!

They had a great ceremony surrounded by their bridal party in this historic Capital Hill Presbyterian Church. Then we were off to do photos around DC, both at the Jefferson memorial and at the capital. We managed to beat the rain, and make some great pictures at the Jefferson with the whole wedding party. Then at the Capital the bride and groom braved the drizzle just to do a couple quick photos. The reception was at the Sewall Belmont Historic House and Museum, and had a presidential campaign theme, topped off with custom campaign buttons. There were toasts from the bridal party as well as the fathers of the couple. Then the bride and groom spent the rest of the reception on the dance floor, including a trip around the dance floor doing the limbo.

For their engagement photos we had to deal with the Marine Corps Marathon, and apparently Aubrey and Evan are secret marathon lovers, because their wedding day was the National Marathon in DC. Everyone did manage to get to the Holy Rosary Catholic Church on time to see Evan pacing around before the ceremony. After a very nice ceremony Aubrey and Evan, with the bridal party in tow were ready for some photos. Evan was reminded that he better treat Aubrey very well, or her bridesmaids will keep him in check. After we sent the bridal party off to the cocktail hour, Aubrey and Evan were able to relax and spend some time alone hanging out. The Hotel Monaco provided unlimited opportunities for photos, between the outside fencing, to the huge windows, and the winding staircase it was a photographer’s dream.

While their adopted hometown of New York dug out from a deep snow, Anne and Kyle joined 54 of their closest friends and relatives at the intimate Dahlgren Chapel of Georgetown University, where the groom attended law school. I have rarely seen a bride as happy as Anne was. From her and her girlfriends’ giddiness over her magnificent Christian Louboutin heels to her joy as she and Kyle exchanged vows, Anne barely stopped smiling the whole day. That continued well into the night, during a lovely dinner reception at the District’s Tabard Inn and a quick dance outside on the street under a glorious full moon. Congratulations, Anne & Kyle!
